Mental wellbeing for business owners

We talk about mental health a lot more now than we ever have, and people are recognising how important it is for maintaining a good work/life balance.

As a small business owner, you have many pressures – looking after staff, trying to maintain or increase profits, keep your cashflow healthy, worrying about the economy and also being able to take time out for yourself and your family.

Xero recently produced a report showing that small business owners had lower life satisfaction than the general population, which is quite concerning.  As a small business owner, no doubt one of the reasons you decided to run your own business was to be able to draw a better salary and have more free time.  If that is not happening, then it may be worth considering making some changes.

A cheerful and calm mindset contributes significantly to your wellbeing – a key to this is being well rested, having time off, physical exercise, eating well.  Why not go for a run or a walk in your lunch break? Just taking that little bit of time out and a change of scene may lose you some time at the coalface but may benefit you and the business overall.  When you do have downtime, put your phone away and try not to think about work at all.  Productivity actually reduces the longer you work so breaks are crucial.

It has also been shown that a greater sense of fulfilment at work improves your well-being so you could consider learning new skills and training that may help you in your job.

Are your staff stressed?  This can lead to stress for yourself too.  Try to take time out with your staff – little things like birthday shouts, morning teas, after work beers, team days etc. can all lead to a closer knit and happy workforce.

If you just need to talk to someone, please reach out to one of our Directors – we are here to support you and your business.
